According to the institute, those who have tested positive for the delta variant of the COVID-19 have very high viral loads and it takes a longer period to clear the virus from their system.
A statement released by the Institute dated July 24, 2021, said "The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), University of Ghana, Legon has observed with concern some characteristics of the new delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 detected at the institute's testing centre since April 2021."
It warned that if preventive measures are not taken seriously and the virus is transmitted to the unvaccinated population, “We may have a more serious outbreak to deal with as a nation."
It added that with a population of >80% vaccinated, the country must be concerned about the consequences of healthy carriers transmitting the virus to the unvaccinated.
