The ultimate weekend of this year’s GN Bank Division One League came to a triumphant conclusion for Zones two and three sides - Karela FC and Dreams FC - as they were officially handed their promotion papers to the elite division and a bitter end for Dunkwa Utd and Wassaman United as they joined relegation bound Eleven Wise, Dynamo FC and Zein FC into the abyss of Division One soccer.

With the relegation battle having dragged on to the very last match day in Zone two, and several teams caught up in the relegation web which already had Sekondi Eleven Wise in its grasp, 15th placed Wassaman Utd won back to back games at home for the first time this half of the season to raise their final tally to 34points. But it wasn’t enough to save their season as they needed the two teams ahead of them to lose to have a chance at survival. Hitherto 14th placed on 32points King Faisal did what they had to do to survive; win against 12th placed on 34points Dunkwa Utd and survive relegation. They got exactly what they needed with a lone goal win that vaulted them to the 13th spot on 35points and painfully sent Dunkwa Utd off into relegation. And Fijai United who had the 13th spot on 33points and needed to pull off a much needed win on the road, did just that, as they edged the already relegated Eleven Wise by a lone goal to survive relegation on 36points and the 10th spot.

Elsewhere on the weekend, Nzema Kotoko edged visiting BYFA by a lone goal to end the season on a winning note, New Edubiase edged FC Samartex by a goal at home for the second spot on 51points, and Champions Karela FC, fittingly completed the double over Bibiani Gold Stars with a 2-0 win to round off their winning season.

Eleven Wise, Wassaman United and Dunkwa United have all been relegated to Division Two.

With Dynamo FC and Zein FC having secured their relegation tickets in Zone three prior to the final match day, the uncertain situation with Okwahu United who had 12 wins and 4 ties for 34points and perhaps some disciplinary issues with the FA made things a bit hard to call. The above situation, coupled with several teams tightly bunched with just a point or two difference between them, all capable of falling into the drop zone and Okwahu Utd moving out heightened the angst on the last day.

Anyway, the cure to all these problems is winning, and win is what all the teams that needed to win did, to leave the last three spots held by Okwahu United, Dynamo FC, and Zein FC intact.

Thirteenth placed Okyeman Planners who started the day with 35points won by a lone goal over visiting Nania FC to up their tally to 38points for the 13th spot, hitherto 12th placed Sporting Mirren pulled a fantastic 3-1 home win over Heart of Lions who ended as runner-ups for the 9th spot on 39points, and Okwahu Utd pulled a 3-0 win on the road over bottommost Zein FC for the first relegation spot on 37points.

Young Wise capped off a remarkable six straight unbeaten run (4wins and two ties) that moved them out of the bottom places with their final win of the season, a 2-0 home win over Phar United, for the 6th spot on 40points to secure their stay. Not to be outdone, Kotoku Royals also picked up the full spoils on the road against Uncle T United for the 5th spot on 40points. And Amidaus Profs divvied the spoils with Danbort FC in a goalless tie, a result that saw the former improve to 39points for the 10th spot and the latter to 40points for the 7th spot.

Elsewhere, Vision FC ended their season with a lone goal win over relegated Dynamo FC for the third spot on 60points, and Champions Dreams FC concluded their brilliant return to the elite division, the same way they started it, with a tie, this time, a 3-3 tie with visiting Tudu Mighty Jets.

For now, in Zone three, we can confidently report that Dynamo FC and Zein FC have been relegated. Our uncertainty over the fate of Okwahu United remains certain. We will provide updates when it becomes available.
