Manchester City tightened their grip on the Premier League top spot with an impressive 3-0 thrashing of Tottenham Spurs at the Etihad this past Saturday as Liverpool’s hopes of a successful title defense fell completely apart following an astonishing late comeback that saw Leicester City capitalize on some poor defending to sink the former with three goals in a chaotic seven-minute period. City will have the chance to open a 10 point lead at the top as they take on Everton at Goodison Park this Wednesday in their last outstanding game.

Also on Saturday, Burley brushed aside a limp Crystal Palace side to distance themselves further from the bottom three, while Brighton managed just a point in a goalless tie at home against Aston Villa.

Saturday

Leicester City 3-1 Liverpool

Leicester scored three goals in seven breathtaking second-half minutes as another Alisson mistake contributed to a 3-1 defeat for Liverpool at the King Power Stadium.

The Premier League champions looked in relative control and deservedly led when Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock after 67 minutes, but Jurgen Klopp's side imploded to slip six points behind their opponents.

James Maddison hauled Leicester level when his free-kick was allowed to stand following a VAR review for an offside call on Daniel Amartey (78) before a terrible breakdown in communication between Alisson and new boy Ozan Kabak allowed Jamie Vardy to tap home from close range (81).

Harvey Barnes compounded Liverpool's misery with a well-taken third (85) as Leicester increased their tally to 46 points.

Crystal Palace 0-3 Burnley

Early goals in both halves helped Burnley to an impressive 3-0 away win at Crystal Palace, almost doubling their away goals tally for the season in one afternoon.

It was a speedy start as Johann Berg Gudmundsson (5) and Jay Rodriguez (10) fired Burnley into a quick two-goal lead, with Sean Dyche's side scoring in the opening half of a Premier League game for the first time in 2021.

Matt Lowton (47) then sent home a wonderful half volley just after the break. The only blemish on Burnley's afternoon was an injury for captain Ben Mee, who was stretchered off late on after taking an inadvertent shoulder to the head from Jordan Ayew.

Burnley scored as many goals at Selhurst Park on Saturday as they had in their previous 10 away league games combined, taking their tally for away Premier League goals this season from five to eight.

They stay in 13th while Burnley go above Brighton and Newcastle into 15th, now 11 points clear of the bottom three.

Manchester City 3-0 Tottenham

Ilkay Gundogan's incredible scoring run continued with two goals in Manchester City's stylish 3-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday, as Pep Guardiola's side pulled seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.

With City already leading through a first-half Rodri penalty, Gundogan fired his first through Hugo Lloris - who had a game to forget - and then outmuscled Davinson Sanchez for a long pass forward from Ederson before tucking in number two to take his tally to nine goals in nine Premier League games in 2021.

Worryingly, Gundogan limped off with a groin problem soon after, but by then he had already put City in complete control against a poor Spurs side who only really threatened when Harry Kane hit the woodwork with an early free-kick and Gareth Bale tested Ederson late on.

City, who are unbeaten since losing to Spurs in November, extended their record run to 16 wins in a row across all competitions, while Jose Mourinho's men dropped to 9th, four points off the top four.

Brighton 0-0 Aston Villa

Emiliano Martinez made more saves than he has in any Premier League match to deny Brighton victory, as Aston Villa held on to draw 0-0 at the Amex Stadium.

Martinez produced a flying fingertip stop to keep out Dan Burn's first-half header, but saved his best work for after the break to frustrate a familiarly profligate Brighton side.

Deflected efforts from Alexis Mac Allister and Joel Veltman had the Argentinian at his very best before he also kept out substitute Danny Welbeck's close-range effort late on as he made nine saves in total.

Villa offered little in attack, with Ross Barkley's tame effort from distance their only shot on target in an out-of-sorts performance, which still lifts them above Tottenham into eighth, while Brighton move 11 points clear of the bottom three and past Burnley, into 15th position.

Sunday

Southampton 1-2 Wolves

Wolves staged a second-half fight-back as Pedro Neto's sublime strike earned a 2-1 win over Southampton at St Mary's.

A flash of brilliance from Neto settled a lively contest as Saints were consigned to a record sixth straight Premier League defeat.

Danny Ings had put the hosts in front with a brilliant volley (25) but the game turned on a moment of controversy as Ryan Bertrand was deemed to have handled Nelson Semedo's shot inside the box.

Ruben Neves converted from the spot to give Wolves a lifeline (53) before Neto's individual strike from an acute angle completed the turnaround (66).

The result moves Wolves above Southampton into 12th place with Ralph Hasenhuttl's side replacing them in 13th with 29 points from 23 games.

West Brom 1-1 Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes scored a sensational volley for Manchester United to maintain their unbeaten away record, but they could not seal all three points against West Brom in a 1-1 draw.

But once again, United fell behind early on when Mbaye Diagne nodded West Brom into a shock lead after just 83 seconds. But, having taken 21 points from losing positions this season, there was hope for United.

Despite a sluggish first-half performance, it was another moment of magic from Fernandes (44) that hauled the visitors level as he fired home a powerful volley.

United were much improved after the break and had a penalty overturned by VAR after it judged Semi Ajayi had not made enough contact to foul Harry Maguire.

West Brom could also have snatched a late winner, but Diagne missed two glorious chances, while Maguire saw an effort tipped over the bar by Sam Johnstone with the last kick of the game.

United's unbeaten away run in the Premier League now stands at 19 games and they go back into second on goal difference, seven points behind leaders Manchester City. The draw does little to boost West Brom's hopes of survival as they remain in 19th with 13 points.

Arsenal 4-2 Leeds United

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's first Premier League hat-trick guided Arsenal to a 4-2 victory over a leaky Leeds at the Emirates despite the visitors' late rally.

Arsenal were 3-0 up at half-time for the first time in the Premier League since February 2018 as Leeds crumbled, and it was Aubameyang, who has now scored more goals in his last four Premier League appearances (5) than he had in his previous 16, benefiting most.

First, Aubameyang's clever, flash finish into the near post from 15 yards (13) put Arsenal ahead, before the Gabon striker doubled his and the Gunners' tally with a penalty after goalkeeper Illan Meslier mistake, dwelling too long on the ball before fouling Bukayo Saka (41).

Hector Bellerin's first goal of the season made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time, again finishing at the near post following superb Arsenal interplay in the box (45), and Aubameyang got his hat-trick after the break with a far-post header from Emile Smith Rowe's cross-shot (47).

As ever with Leeds, there was entertainment at both ends as Marcelo Bielsa's side caused a scare, halving the deficit through Pascal Struijk's bullet header (58) and sub Helder Costa's close-range finish (69), but Arsenal saw the game out.

The result means Arsenal leapfrog Leeds into 10th, though Leeds are two points behind with a game in hand.

Everton 0-2 Fulham

Josh Maja's first Premier League goals gave Fulham a huge boost in their relegation fight with a 2-0 win over a lethargic Everton.

Fulham controlled Sunday night's game from start to finish at Goodison Park but were facing a familiar headache when their dominance had not been rewarded before half-time, with Bobby Reid's header against the post the closest they had come.

But Maja struck a well-worked opener three minutes into the second period for the perfect Fulham welcome on his first start for the club, before doubling the lead just after the hour after Harrison Reed struck the woodwork.

The result builds Fulham's hope of a great escape as they lifted themselves back within seven points of safety. Everton has the 7th spot.

Monday

West Ham 3-0 Sheffield United

West Ham moved up to fifth in the Premier League as Declan Rice, Issa Diop and Ryan Fredericks were all on target in a 3-0 win over rock bottom Sheffield United at the London Stadium.

West Ham, who had an early penalty ruled out by VAR, took the lead from the spot five minutes before half-time.

Jesse Lingard was brought down by Chris Basham and Rice converted the penalty.

David Moyes' side doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Diop headed in Aaron Cresswell's corner as the hosts made it six wins in eight league games. Substitute Ryan Fredericks wrapped up a 3-0 win for the Hammers in stoppage time (90+6).

The result moves the Irons up to fifth in the table , two points clear of sixth-placed Liverpool. Sheffield United remain bottom, 14 points adrift of safety with 14 games remaining.

Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

Timo Werner finally ended his Premier League goal drought as Chelsea eased past Newcastle with a 2-0 win to move into the top four.

The hosts, who named Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal for his first league game since October, took the lead in the 31st minute when substitute Olivier Giroud - on in place of the injured Tammy Abraham - struck from close range.

Werner (39) then doubled the advantage eight minutes later, ending a run of 14 games without a goal in the league.

After the break, Arrizabalaga was called into action on a couple of occasions, saving Jonjo Shelvey's free-kick before keeping out Joe Willock's header, but Chelsea were comfortable as they secured a fourth straight league win under Thomas Tuchel.

Victory sees Chelsea move above Liverpool and West Ham, to move into fourth. They remain unbeaten in six games in all competitions since Tuchel's arrival at Stamford Bridge.
