• Governance is about giving and taking opinions and ideas. And by this write-up, I hope I can convince you about the need to reverse your policy regarding the re-opening of school.

Mr President, please reconsider school re-opening

Dear Mr President,

I hope you are well and keeping safe during this COVID-19 period. As citizens, we have to support you every step along the way – especially in these distressing times. And this support includes reaching out to you directly (regardless of the medium).

• The Library is not the only thing that portrays your failure as an MP. Look at the road in front of the Regional Hospital and that tells you that you are sleeping on the job. You should not tell me that MPs don’t construct roads because there are other MPs that have influenced many projects in their constituencies.

Dear Hon. Ameyaw Cheremeh,
Before I proceed, I want to introduce myself. My name is Augustine Boahen a native of Sunyani. I had my basic education at Sunyani and my Secondary education at Sunyani Secondary before proceeding to the University of Cape Coast. I did my national service at Sunyani before I migrated to Canada and has been here for the past 25 years. I am giving this background to show that I am a born and bred son of your constituency. For the past three years, I have been in Ghana three times and what I see in Sunyani has compelled me to pen you this letter. My last visit was in February this year and I wanted to meet you but was told that you were in Accra.

• Saiko is a severely destructive form of illegal fishing, where industrial trawlers target the staple catch of artisanal fishers and sell this fish back to local coastal communities at a profit. It threatens jobs and food security and endangers Ghana’s economy. It is also referred to as “Galamsey on the sea”.

Dear Mr. President,

We respectfully call upon you to issue an urgent directive to end “saiko” fishing, an illegality that is undermining your commendable efforts to protect the fishing industry that provides food security and livelihoods for over 2.7 million Ghanaians.

• The best these unions could do was to write a letter to the GES to reject government’s intention to reopen the schools. This response, in my opinion, was an impulsive action that was not well thought out.

What is generally known about covid-19 is that it kills by attacking our respiratory system and other organs of the body. But what has escaped us is that it can also kill through starvation or the thought of its effects on our businesses.
