Dr Nyarkotey Alternative Medical College

    The Traditional and Alternative Medicine draft bill 2014 defines alternative medicine as any form of treatment that is outside the mainstream allopathic and Traditional Medicine in Ghana. In 2000, Parliament enacted a Traditional Medicine Practice Act, (ACT 575).

The college aims to bring confidence and public trust in the alternative medicine industry. Lots of people are interested in studying alternative medicine, but are confused as to where to get this education, for one reason, or another. The college, which is also a center for public information, with regards to alternative medicine, is geared towards helping those interested in studying any of the alternative medicine modalities. The college has plans to launch the first Ghana Holistic Medical Journal soon to showcase what we have in alternative medicine to the world.

  • Dr. Nyarkotey will also examine the educational pathway for alternative medicine practitioners, practice and accreditation status of the new emerging field in Ghana.

    Ghanaians love alternative medicine, and they are paying a high price for that devotion. From regular visits to acupuncturists, chiropractors and naturopaths, to the daily ingestion of homeopathic remedies, Chinese herbs, and megavitamins, the use of alternative therapies has become a $34 billion-a-year business. 80% percent of Ghanaians use some form of alternative medicine.

    The first batch of 50 students studying at the Nyarkotey College of Holistic Medicine are scheduled to travel to Ukraine, next year, for further studies on holistic medicine. The Nyarkotey College of Holistic Medicine is a Ghanaian-based Holistic Medical school that trains students to research and promote science-based alternative medicine.

  • Notwithstanding, according to Oklepeme , there are no schools or universities offering medical programs in alternative medicine and this is one of the major setbacks to train practitioners in the field.

    The Konor of Yilo Klo state, Oklepeme Nuer Anobaah Sasraku II, has charged the Traditional Medicine Practice Council of the Ministry of Health to weed out quack alternative medicine practitioners in the country, who do not have professional Doctorates in alternative medicine, but are using the title, Doctor.
