The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called on president Akufo-Addo to declare a nationwide lockdown.

In a press statement issued by the influential body on the national response to Covid-19, the association noted the continuous community spread the disease poses to the country’s inadequate health system and consequently called on the president to declare a nationwide lockdown with exceptions for those providing essential services.

“The GMA being fully conscious of the threat posed by the pandemic, the disturbing trend of community spread and the obvious inadequate capacity (logistic and human resource) of the nation’s Health System to deal with the increased numbers of COVID-19 infection especially severe and critical cases, hereby call on His Excellency the President of the Republic Ghana to declare a Nationwide Lockdown….”

The association acknowledged that the lockdown may not be a comfortable decision for the country’s leadership and citizens alike, but it is in the ultimate interest of the country.

According to the Ghana Health Service daily updates, as at the morning of 25th March 2020, a total of sixty-eight (68) cases including two (2) deaths had been confirmed in the country.
