History was made in the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Confederation Cup competition as the 2018 preliminary match between Asante Kotoko S/C and Congo’s Club Athletique Rennaissance Aiglon (CARA) saw as many as five penalty kicks awarded in regulation time by Senegalese referee, Issah Sy, to Kotoko.

Kotoko eventually won the match 1-0 on the stroke of full time, as substitute Yakubu Mohammed converted a spot-kick after Sadique Adams was fouled in the penalty box.

The striker displaced Congolese goalie Odongo Bouegena in the process, and the wild jubilation that greeted the goal summed up the frustration of the supporters in the course of the match.

The Porcupine Warriors began the match on a vigourous note, putting intense pressure on the visitors and it came as no surprise as the homers were awarded their first penalty kick in the eight minute, but Adams would squander the glorious opportunity.

CARA responded briefly with some crisp inter-positional play by the players in their own half, and this kept the Kotoko attackers at bay, ending the first session barren.

In the 57th minute, Kotoko’s Kwame Boahen was brought down in the vital area for Kotoko’s second penalty-kick after Kwame Boahen was brought down, but the resultant kick was wasted by skipper Amos Frimpong.

The Porcupine Warriors had their third penalty kick in the 69th minute which was also wasted by Baba Mahama, and in the course of the game, CARA had the chance to also convert a spot-kick, but as fate would have it, the visitors missed the opportunity after goalie Odongo Bouegena’s kick failed to enter the net.

Kotoko had the last laugh when substitute Yakubu finally scored from the spot-kick after Adams was brought down in the goal area.
