In one of the most talked about tennis matches of the year, Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, NY, putting Williams one step closer to completing the first calendar year Grand Slam since Steffi Graff in 1988.

It was not a blow-out as some predicted it would be. After falling behind in the first set, Venus forced a third set with dominating play in the second set. But Serena’s play was too much to handle for the upset.

Tuesday’s match between the sisters was the 27th meeting in their careers with Serena winning for the 16th time. With tonight’s win, Serena will take on Roberta Vinci in the semifinals Thursday night. Williams is 4-0 in her career against the Italian.

Serena said it was a challenge “going against your best friend.”

She said “when I’m playing her I don’t think of her as my sister,” and called Venus the toughest opponent and greatest competitor she’s ever faced.
