Defending PL champions, Chelsea, raised their unbeaten run under interim boss Guus Hiddink to 10 as they capitalized on a rapid start that saw them steer in 3 goals within the first 17minutes en route to an easy 5-1 victory over a lucklustre Newcastle side at the Stamford Bridge.
Elsewhere, Giannelli Imbula scored his first goal for Stoke as they ended their three-match losing streak in the PL against Bournemouth, Norwich blew a 2 point lead at home but managed to salvage a point against visiting West Ham and Southampton stretched their unbeaten run to six games as Shane Long's goal consigned Swansea to a first defeat under new manager Francesco Guidolin.
And on Sunday, Tottenham served notice that they will be a force to reckon with for the rest of the season of as they dealt a huge blow to Manchester City’s title hopes and boosted theirs with a dramatic 2-1 victory at the Etihad of all places to move just 2points adrift of the top spot.
Not to be outdone in the title chase, Arsenal's Danny Welbeck threw the PL title race wide open when he scored a dramatic winner with only seconds left as Arsenal beat leaders Leicester City 2-1 at home and relegation threatened Aston Villa did themselves no favors at home as visiting Liverpool flung them deeper into the relegation pit with a merciless 6-0 thumping.
Sunderland 2-1 Manchester United
Sunderland boosted their survival hopes with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Saturday - their first Premier League win over the Red Devils at the Stadium of Light.
Tunisian Wahbi Khazri making his second PL start raced the struggling Black Cats ahead after just three minutes with his low in-swinging free-kick from the left that crucially evaded Jermain Defoe and the United defence before it nestled in the far corner of the unsighted de Gea's goal but Anthony Martial hauled United level after he clipped the ball over Vito Mannone, who had parried Juan Mata's shot at the 39th minute mark.
The hosts created the better chances after the break and deservedly edged in front as Lamine Kone's powerful header from Khazri's corner forced David de Gea to turn the ball into his own net.
United kicked into gear but they struggled to break down a resolute Black Cats defence, with Wayne Rooney denied the chance to respond by Kone immediately after.
Sunderland's win took them to within one point of rivals Newcastle and the last safety spot held by Norwich while United remain in sole possesion of the fifth spot.
Bournemouth 1-3 Stoke City
Stoke City ended their 3 game losing run by beating Bournemouth 3-1 on Saturday afternoon, with recent new signing Giannelli Imbula powering home with a brilliant long range strike in the 9th minute to give the visitors a half-time lead.
Ibrahim Afellay struck a sweet second for Stoke, and substitute Joselu made it 3-0 two minutes later.
Matt Ritchie responded immediately for the Cherries, but his left-footed strike proved to be a mere consolation.
It was Stoke's first away win in 2016 and only their second league victory in seven attempts.
Stoke moved up to ninth in the table, five points off the European places, while Bournemouth remain 15th and four points above the relegation zone.
Crystal Palace 1-2 Watford
Troy Deeney scored twice to steer Watford to victory and extend Crystal Palace's run without a league win to nine games.
The captain put Watford into an early lead from the spot following a controversially awarded penalty, but Emmanuel Adebayor's first goal in Palace's colors drew the Eagles level.
Watford retook the lead with seven minutes left when Deeney drove home Ben Watson's cross.
And Palace ended with 10 men after Pape Souare was shown a red card late on for a two-footed challenge on Valon Behrami.
Watford's second league win of 2016 pushed them up into eighth place in the table, while Palace remain 12th.
Everton 0-1 West Bromwich
West Brom edged Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park for their first taste of victory in the Premier League since January 2.
West Brom's winner came from the chest of forward Salomon Rondon, who tapped in Jonas Olsson's looping header from close range in the 14th minute.
Everton, who had 76 per cent possession and 34 attempts on goal, had several chances to equalise in both halves as both Ross Barkley and Tom Cleverley hit the woodwork, but West Brom held on for their first league away win since October 24 to move to the 14th spot on 32points, 3 points behind 10th placed Everton.
Norwich 2-2 West Ham
Norwich blew a two-goal lead but ended a run of five league defeats with a draw against West Ham at Carrow Road.
After a first half where chances were few and far between, Norwich burst into life after the break with Robbie Brady (54) robbing Michail Antonio of the ball and curling in a shot before Wes Hoolahan (65) drove in a close range effort to put the home side 2-0 up.
But Dimitri Payet slotted in for the Hammers after Victor Moses had a shot parried into his path before Payet pulled the ball back for Mark Noble to steer in a shot to complete West Ham's comeback.
Hammers substitute Emmanuel Emenike had a great chance late on when he got on the end of an Andy Carroll flick on but he trapped the ball instead of diverting it towards goal and allowed keeper John Ruddy to gather.
West Ham dropped to 7th on 40points - a point behind United while Norwich moved out of the relegation places on 24points, courtesy of goals advantage over Newcastle.
Swansea 0-1 Southampton
Shane Long headed the winner for Southampton as they beat Swansea 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium.
The Irishman converted from Steven Davis' cross from the right, although Swans keeper Lukasz Fabianski may feel he could have done better.
The goal was enough to give Southampton a fifth win in six games as they kept a sixth clean sheet in a row.
Swansea remained 16th with the loss while Southampton moved to 6th with the victory on 40points.
Chelsea 5-1 Newcastle
Newcastle dropped into the relegation zone on goal difference after three goals in the first 17 minutes set Chelsea on their way to an easy win.
Diego Costa slid in the opener, a Rolando Aarons error let in Pedro to run clear and fire home, and Costa set up Willian to make it 3-0 all within 20 minutes.
Pedro added a fourth in the 59th minute before substitute Bertrand Traore finished from Cesar Azpilicueta's cross in the 83rd minute, before Andros Townsend's late consolation.
Chelsea climbed up to 12th after extending their unbeaten league run under Guus Hiddink to 10 matches and 12 in all competitions.
Arsenal 2-1 Leicester
Arsenal breathed life back into their Premier League title charge as Danny Welbeck's 95th-minute winner sealed a 2-1 victory over 10-man Leicester on Sunday.
Welbeck struck late on to break Leicester's resolve after the league leaders looked to have survived 40 minutes with a man down, following Danny Simpson's dismissal for a second bookable offence.
Jamie Vardy gave the Foxes the lead with a hotly-disputed penalty on the stroke of half-time after he tumbled over Nacho Monreal's outstretched leg.
Substitute Theo Walcott then set up a frantic final 20 minutes with a side-foot finish from Olivier Giroud's superb knockdown.
Leicester still lead the table - but Arsenal's win leaves them only two points clear of their conquerors who remain third on 51points and a second placed Tottenham Spurs side that won against City at the Etihad on Sunday.
Aston Villa 0-6 Liverpool
Six different goal scorers helped Liverpool to a rampant 6-0 win at bottom side Aston Villa as the Reds thrashed bottom club Aston Villa to move up to eighth in the Premier League.
Sturridge, making his first league start since October, headed home before James Milner's free-kick crept in after being missed by keeper Mark Bunn.
Emre Can rifled in a shot, Divock Origi slotted home and Nathaniel Clyne bundled in to add to the Reds' lead.
Kolo Toure headed in a sixth as Villa were punished for a poor performance.
Villa, 20th with 16points on the log had nowhere to go but down following their defeat, and they remain 7 clear points shy of the first safety spot with 12 games to the end of the season.
Manchester City 1-2 Tottenham Spurs
Tottenham moved to within two points of Premier League leaders Leicester as Christian Eriksen struck a late winner at fourth-placed Manchester City.
The visitors, who started the game in third following Arsenal's 2-1 win at Leicester, took the lead after Mark Clattenburg controversially awarded a 53rd minute penalty when Danny Rose's cross hit Raheem Sterling under the arm right on the edge of the penalty area, and visiting striker Harry Kane fired home for the lead.
Yaya Toure struck a 20-yard free-kick against the bar before teenage substitute Kelechi Iheanacho levelled things up in the 74th minute.
But Spurs earned a fifth league win in a row as Christian Eriksen slotted in after he was played through on goal by substitute Erik Lamela to coolly finish at the 83rd minute mark.
Eriksen's late strike sealed all three points for Mauricio Pochettino's side as they moved back above their north London rivals into second and just two points behind league leaders Leicester while City remain in sole possession of the 4th spot, 6 points clear of their closest contender.
