With the Premier League on a scheduled short break, the nation’s second tier league took center stage over the weekend and produced some of the usual unexpected results across all three zones as RTU and Bofokwa failed to capitalize on their home turf, Karela FC scored their third straight win to take over the third spot and Accra Great Olympics crashed out of the summit at Prampram following a stunning lone goal defeat, and the misery continued for Roberto FC who succumbed to their eighth straight defeat of the campaign.

In the topmost encounter of the weekend in Zone one, second placed Berekum Arsenal kept their title hopes alive and their undefeated home record intact with a 2-1 victory over the previously third placed FC Tanga to remain just a point adrift of the top spot with the latter dropping to the fourth spot on 25points. Leaders – Mighty Royals – handled their business at home with a 3-1 spanking of Bolga Stars to maintain the top spot and their single point advantage over the closest competition, and Bofokwa Tano’s bid to get closer to the top spot was stonewalled on their home turf by the visiting Steadfast FC who held then to a 1-1 tie for a share of the spoils. Bofoakwa moved into the third spot but drifted 5points off the top spot they once held for a couple of weeks, and they will definitely rue the lost opportunity.

Real Tamale United (RTU) kept faith with their recent ‘out of sorts’ performance that saw them pick up just 2points out of a possible 9, as they shockingly went down by a lone goal at home to Wa Rockets to make it 2points out of a possible 12 from four matches as they dropped to the 7th spot on 22points, a whopping 8points off the chase. PL returnees, B. A. United’s, attempt to improve their dwindling fortunes with a road win at Guan Utd failed, but at least they left with a share of the spoils and improved to the 6th spot on 23points.

Still in Zone one, Berlin FC defeated cellar dwellers – Liberty Babies – by three goals to move up fourth on 25points, Unity FC added to the woes of Tamale Utrecht with a 3-1 home win and Mpuasuman downed visiting Bawku Utd by two goals to nothing at home.

In-form Karela FC stayed hot for their third straight win in Zone two to shove Eleven Wise out of the third spot on 27points - 6 off the top - following their 2-1 win over Dunkwa Utd and second placed Bibiani Gold Stars kept up the pressure for the summit with a 4-2 win over the visiting Proud Utd to remain 5points off the lead. And, leaders – Elmina Sharks – managed a lone goal victory over visiting Achiken in what many thought was going to be a blowout win for the undefeated home team.

Sekondi Eleven Wise dropped to the fourth spot on the log following a hard fought impressive two all road tie against Wassaman Utd. The Show Boys fell 8points behind whilst Wassaman held on to their mid table spot.  The woes continued for Asokwa Deportivo – once considered – credible contenders in the division as they went down again, this time at home, a lone goal defeat at the hands of Cornerstones to fall to four straight losses and a tie in their last 5 outings. Grabbing just a single point out of a possible 15.

Elsewhere in the zone, King Faisal picked up their fourth win of the season – a lone goal home victory – over Venomous Vipers, Starke dispatched the visiting Giant Killers – Samartex – by two goals to one at home and Nzema Kotoko kept up their recent improved performance with a 2-1 win over the visiting Tarkwa Utd to improve to the sixth spot on 20points.

The musical chair dance for the summit in Zone three was effected this past weekend as the superficially rejuvenated Dade Boys who had been impressive and undefeated since week 8 saw their 5 game undefeated streak including 2 straight on the road crash at Prampram where they found the pressure from Pure Joy too much to handle and sank to a lone goal loss. A loss that evaporated their 2point advantage and dropped them to the second spot on 28points, a point off the lead now held by Okyeman Planners who notched a lone goal win at home over SP Mirren. Vision FC fared better than expected on the road, as they edged the cellar dwelling King Solomon outfit by a lone goal to move up third on the log on 27points with the chance of ending the first round on a high note.

Hitherto fourth placed Okwawu Utd did themselves no favor at home as they dropped to the fifth spot on 25points, 4 off the lead after managing just a draw at home against Istanbul FC who ended up being a bit more disruptive than anticipated and PL returnees – Heart of Lions – finally found the ‘road breakthrough’ they’ve been looking for, successfully ending their 4 game road losing run with a lone goal impressive win at Nania FC to jump to the fourth spot on 26points, a game’s win adrift of the summit to set the stage for an interesting finish to the first round.

Elsewhere in the zone, Tema Youth took full advantage of their home court to compound the misery of Roberto FC, handing them their eighth straight record loss of the campaign with a 2-1 win to maintain their 6th spot whilst the latter remained cushioned off the cellar by King Solomon. Danbort FC improved their standing with a lone goal win over Kotoku Royals and Mighty Jets drained and listless engines earned them a mere point at home against Amidaus.
