Action in the nation’s GN Bank Division One soccer league will continue this Wednesday and Thursday with Day 18 matches that were rescheduled from 6th and 7th of July being honored at the various league centers.
The chase for premiership soccer continues to remain very competitive in all three zones with the race tightening somewhat in Zone one with B. A. United and Bofokwa Tano breaking in to the top four ranks and FC Tanga with a game in hand breathing down on leaders Mighty Royals. In Zone two, 7points off the summit, surging Karela FC, is bent on preventing table toppers – unbeaten Elmina Sharks – from running away with the zone and in zone 3 where Accra Gt. Olympics have a 3point cushion against the closest competition, it still remains an open race as Okyeman Planners, Heart of Lions and Vision FC all mount pressure for the top spot.
In Zone one, it’s nothing but big games and an equal opportunity affair for all the teams within the top 6 bracket to win and possibly take over the summit as the point difference between them is just one and two. Summit holders – Mighty Royals with 33points – have dropped three straight games, all on the road – picking up 0points out of a possible 9, they will be under severe pressure to win their first home game of the second term to hold on to the summit as they welcome a boisterous Wa Rockets side that has sole possession of the second half of the table and has fortunately for their hosts not fared well on the road, especially against the better teams. They are bound to put up a good fight for a draw at worse but the Royals seem to have the advantage in this one, they can’t afford another loss or a draw. One time Apostles of Ghana soccer – B.A. United - are suddenly feeling it, two straight home wins have them on the ascendency and in the second spot with their fans talking about making a quick return to the Premiership, but their neighbors, Berlin FC, who are still smarting over their inability to defeat lowly Bawku Utd will surely have something to say about it as they look to bounce back from their weekend loss in this rivalry match that never fails to excite the fans. And third placed with 32points – Bofoakwa Tano – who started the season quite brightly and ceded the top spot due to a string of road losses and ties at home will have the chance to move up top again should things break their way. They must however defeat the visiting all of a sudden fourth placed talented Bolga All Stars outfit who also have 32points and a strong urge to keep moving anywhere but up the log. The Tano lads have pulled two solid wins at home this second round and they look quite set to pull a third if they play their best.
Fifth placed FC Tanga with a game in hand will definitely not have it easy as they post their quest for the top spot against the aspirations of the underperforming mid-tablers -Real Tamale United – in another of the day’s dicey encounters. Interestingly FC Tanga are winless on the road, and this may be an opening, as the Tamale lads have on occasion played poorly and lost to not so good teams at home. And Berekum Arsenals will seek to rebound at home following this past weekend’s defeat at the hands of B.A Utd that knocked them out of the top four ranks as they host cellar dwellers Liberty Babies in a must win match.
Elsewhere in the zone, Unity FC will take on Steadfast in a must win game to distance themselves from the relegation places, Mpuasuman will be in search for some solace at home from this past weekend’s 5-0 drubbing as hosts of Tamale Utrecht and Guan Utd will take on Bawku Utd at home in the ‘battle of the relegation threatened’.
In Zone two, Elmina Sharks with a game in hand will look to keep their iron clad grip on the summit as they host Proud Utd, a side they defeated by a lone goal in the first round. Seven points adrift of the summit second placed surging Karela FC will seek to maintain the pressure on the Sharks as they host the uninspiring Cornerstone. Karela has picked up 7pointgs – 2 wins and a draw – in their first three outings of the second term and it doesn’t look like their guests will be able to cause an upset. Third placed Gold Stars and fourth placed Eleven Wise with a point difference in favor of the former will duke it out for the chance to hold on to the third spot with Gold Stars looking to rebound from this past weekend’s defeat at Samartex as well avenge their first term 3-1 spanking at the hands of the Show Boys.
Fifth placed Asokwa Deportivo look likely to continue their recent renaissance as they go for their fourth straight win of the second term with hopes of breaking into the top four ranks soon, as they play host to Tarkwa Utd and FC Samartex will slug it out with Wassaman Utd as both sides look to strengthen their position around the middle of the log.
Elsewhere, mid tablers – Nzema Kotoko whose recent rise has been deflated by a three consecutive road game losing streak will attempt to turn their campaign around as hosts of relegation threatened Venomous Vipers who need to turn things around before it gets any worse than it currently is. Starke FC will go all out for the win at home against Dunkwa Utd as they look to distance themselves from the relegation places and Alhaji Grunsah’s once proud franchise – King Faisal – now holding the bottommost spot in the zone cannot afford to lose to the visiting Achiken outfit as they continue their seemingly insurmountable battle to avoid relegation.
In Zone three, Gt. Olympics’ quest to hold on to the top spot as well as maintain their 3point advantage over the chasing second placed Okyeman Planners will have to come on the road against the relegation threatened Nania FC. A cagey encounter awaits the Dade Boys and they will have to put in their maximum best as Nania looks to avoid a third straight loss and move out of the relegation places. Oly won the first round encounter by a lone goal. Second placed Okyeman Planners look set to at worse keep the pressure on Olympics as they host the beatable relegation threatened Roberto FC with the chance of perhaps leapfrogging Olympics not far off their minds should Nania FC pull up the upset. And Heart of Lions will try to keep things close as they take on the cellar dwellers King Solomon who will be in the hunt for just their fourth win of the season on the road. A tough looking match for the Lions who have not been exactly great on the draw.
Fourth placed Vision FC, still chafing over their inability to dispatch the ailing Roberto FC and the dropped points will battle it out with a Tema Youth side that is looking to rebound from this past weekend's slide at the latter’s home, Vision FC edged TY by a lone goal in their first round meeting but it remains to be seen if they can win at Tema. Okwawu Utd will definitely hold on their 5th spot at the end of day but they will have to defeat Danbort FC on the road to move up the log to be considered as true contenders. Danbort are riding a three game slide and they will definitely put in the work to end it.
Elsewhere, Mighty Jets will look to get into the winning column as hosts of Sporting Mirren, Pure Joy will battle it out at home against Kotoku Royals as they look move further away from the relegation places and Istanbul will welcome Amidaus to Akim Takyiman with hopes for a victory.
