GN Bank Division One League football club – Cape Coast based Elmina Sharks – this afternoon qualified to play in next season’s edition of the Ghana Premier Football League with a 3-1 win over the visiting Bibiani Gold Stars in their match played at the Nduom Sports Stadium.
Two first half goals from Richard Atika and Daniel Obeng gave the Sharks a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime. Charles McCarthy sealed the deal with the third goal deep into injury time for the Sharks who needed just a point to seal their berth for the Premiership over their closest pursuers – Karela FC – who mounted an unsuccessful second round bid to upset the Sharks.
Gold Stars struck a consolation goal in the final minute of the game to leave the final score at 3-1.
The Sharks had one of the most remarkable outings in recent Division One league history, playing unbeaten throughout the first round of the season, losing three games away in the second round and sealing their qualification on 65points with two matches to the end of the season.
The team is owned by Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, the flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party whose company GN Bank is also the headline sponsor of the Division One League.
Going forward, it will be interesting to see what steps and changes the team will take to make their promotion and stay in the elite division of Ghana soccer a permanent one.
