Alain Traore's stunning free-kick with a minute to the end of the game sealed third place in the Africa Cup of Nations for Burkina Faso and fourth place for Ghana who went into the tournament as favorites to win it all.

The Turkey-based attacker thumped in a beauty of an angled free-kick over goalkeeper Richard Ofori from the right side of the 18-yard box into the top corner of the net for the winner in the Gabonese coastal city of Port-Gentil.

Burkina Faso's Stallions celebrate their third place finish over Ghana's Black Stars

It was the second highest finish in the biennial African football showcase for the Burkinabe Stallions, who finished runners-up four years ago.

The Black Stars of Ghana have played in five third-place play-offs, losing four.

The Black Stars could have been several goals up at the half hour mark as they dominated possession only to be let down by their inability to convert in front of goal.

New Swansea City signing - Jordan Ayew - handled the ball when poised to shoot from close range with the game less than a minute old before Emmanuel Agyemang Badu who was the stand-in captain on the afternoon headed wide in the third minute. Bernard Tekpetey later added to the stars profligacy in front of goal as he struck the crossbar during a goalmouth melee.

Burkina Faso’s best chance in the opening half fell to Prejuce Nakoulma just before half-time as he sprinted with the ball from the halfway line only to shoot off target.

The third place finish was a measure of consolation for Burkina, who were denied a place in the final by a penalty shootout loss to Egypt.

Richard Ofori, the lone local player on the team finally had his debut in the tournament, and he made the most of it, rescuing his side several times before Alain Traore dented his impressive performance with his perfect strike.

Egypt will play Cameroon in tomorrow's final.
